Each birthday marks a milestone in our lives. For the U.S. Marines, November 10, 2025 is an extraordinary milestone – 250 years of exemplary dedication and service to our country and the freedoms it embraces. The U.S. Marine Corps motto says it all – Semper Fidelis – Always Faithful.
Travel down country roads, alleyways and out-of-the-way places and you’re sure to see the quirky, eccentric or just plain strange. This is certainly true in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Here are a few worth your attention during your tour of the odd and peculiar.

The Lowcountry has a long, proud military heritage. A shining example of pride, patriotism, honor and courage was set by the men known as the Tuskegee Airmen.
A survivor of failed colonies and Spanish shipwrecks, the Marsh Tacky is the South Carolina State Heritage Horse. The breed is critically endangered, with only about five hundred Marsh Tackies alive today.
Beaufort National Cemetery was established in 1863 for burial of Union troops who perished during the Civil War. Over one hundred Confederate soldiers are buried there as well. The site serves as the final resting place for over 20,000 veterans from every major American conflict.
