Tourist Food Rescue Program

Vicki White

Established in 2023, the Tourist Food Rescue Program is once again underway on Hilton Head Island for the summer vacation season. Visitors to Hilton Head Island can help feed the hungry with a post-vacation food donation.

Second Helpings, a nonprofit food rescue organization, has partnered with rental agencies, property managers, Grayco and the local community to collect unopened, nonperishable food that would be thrown away or left behind at the end of a tourist’s vacation stay. Second Helpings will deliver the nonperishable items to food pantries and soup kitchens that serve those that are food insecure on Hilton Head Island.

Departing tourists (and island residents) can drop off unopened, non-perishable food items at specially marked donation bins at a variety of locations throughout the island. You can find these bins at:

Second Helpings, a United Way member, is a nonprofit food rescue organization combatting hunger in the South Carolina Lowcountry. Non-perishable food items that would otherwise end up in landfills are collected and distributed by Second Helpings volunteers. Over 350 volunteers deliver 3.2 million pounds of food annually, free of charge, to over fifty agencies.
