Discover Port Royal’s Position in History

Port Royal’s prime water location created an extensive war-oriented history, leaving behind legends and fascinating remnants of its involvement for generations of residents and guests to explore. During the Revolutionary War, the British captured Savannah in 1779 and Charleston in 1780, which increased the importance of the American patriots housed in Port Royal who bravely fought the British Tories living around the bend on Daufuskie Island. The Civil War brought more tragic battles with Confederate Soldiers stationed in Port Royal. The American Revolution and the War of 1812 spurred the American Navy to guard this inland access in the subsequent Spanish-American War in 1895. Port Royal was privileged to have one of eleven Atlantic coast steam cannons that could blast up to 100 lbs. of explosives over three miles. Fortunately, Port Royal was not attacked by the Spanish. Therefore, the enormous cannon has remained idle near the concrete defense embankments, which are all still visible and impressive today.
